Hemisphere Engineering U.S. has unique expertise in Biosafety Level 4 (BSL4) labs, which are reserved for life-threatening diseases with no known cure.
High containment laboratories are designed to provide a safe environment for handling deadly pathogens such as the Ebola virus, Lassa virus, Marburg virus, Congo Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever and Russian Spring-Summer Encephalitis. They provide the special means for dealing with those pathogens that cause life-threatening infections or have the potential to cause serious epidemics.

The recently common Bird flu, Foot and Mouth Disease and Mad Cow Diseases are types of diseases studied in Biosafety Level 3Ag (BSL 3Ag) Facilities. These facilities study diseases, which commonly cause infection in animals and plants but may not infect humans. Because these diseases are usually restricted to non-human pathogens, the facility needs to be constructed to a very similar high standard that a BSL-4 facility is constructed.
Due to the small number of high containment facilities in existence world-wide, there are very few engineers in the world that specialize in these types of systems or have expertise in this area. Hemisphere Engineering U.S. has been directly involved with five of the six BSL-4 facilities built word-wide within the past 15 years.
In addition to our design and engineering capabilities, we have found a demand for our expertise in the commissioning field. The unique demands and expectations placed on a high containment facility require a thorough and systematic commissioning process that is more stringent than that for a less sophisticated lab.
