Millard Rehabilitation Center
The Workers’ Compensation Board’s new Millard Health Centre (MHC) at Edmonton City Centre Airport is WCB’s replacement for the aging Millard Rehabilitation Centre in south-centre Edmonton. The 11,153 m2 two-storey structure opened in the spring of 2002.
The design of the Centre evolved from a simple, utilitarian concept into a complex structure retaining many of the original utilitarian aspects, while adding new ones in response to WCB’s project management team’s suggestions and direction. This evolution presented the consulting team with numerous challenges in terms of coordination and adaptation to the unusual structure. As such, budget targets, while being kept in mind, had to be upgraded as concepts were solidified into design.
The guiding theme for electrical design, oft-repeated, was flexibility. The client undergoes numerous reconfigurations of office space in any given year, so power, lighting, and telecommunication systems had to be designed so the reconfigurations would be easy and as inexpensive as possible. Construction valued at $19M.
