Provincial Archives Of Alberta
Opened in the fall of 2003, Alberta’s new Provincial Archives is an 11,000 sq. m2 facility built on 17 acres of land.
It offers:
• 85 km of shelving
• 20 storage vaults located on two floors with
specialized environmental controls
• reference and reading room
• library
• small conference center
• exhibit area
• conservation laboratory
• processing areas and staff offices
• office space to accommodate the Friends of the Archives and the Archives Society of Alberta
• one of the few government archives in Canada with its public reading room and all its holdings in one location
Hemisphere Engineering Inc. carried out mechanical and electrical engineering work on
the facility. The program required special control of temperature, humidity, and
ventilation rates, including dehumidification of air supplies during summer months to
limit upper levels of relative humidity. There were multiple vaults with varying ranges of
temperature/ humidity, including several cold storage and freezer vaults.
Lighting design was carefully controlled for light spectrum, intensity, and special consideration to reduce degradation impact.
