Canadian Science Center for Human & Animal Health
This is the only facility in the world in which human and animal laboratories are accommodated under one roof at Biosafety Level 2, Level 3, Level 3+ and Biosafety Level 4 (suited lab). This world-class complex is equipped to study the most deadly contagious killer pathogens and the Center’s level 4 laboratories are Canada’s first. This facility was constructed, commissioned, tested and certified for occupancy in 1997 and has since become a world “benchmark” for laboratories.
Lab section of the facility operates under graduated levels of containment to restrict outside exposure to biological material and lab processes, or to isolate those materials and processes from outside contamination.
Hemisphere Engineering was responsible for all of the design engineering requirements for this project: plumbing, utilities, electrical, security, lighting, HVAC and controls.
Completed in 1997 at a cost of $145M.
