May 8, 2009 - Canstruction
Canstruction® combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed hungry people. Competing teams showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. At the close of the exhibitions, all of the food used in the structures is donated to local food banks.
Our Project - I “CAN” Go Green
For Canstruction Edmonton 2009, Hemisphere Engineering decided to can-struct an environmentally friendly dual-flush low-flow water closet. Also known as a toilet to most people, water closets represent a significant amount of water usage in a building. A dual flush toilet provides two modes of flushing that result in significant water savings for both the owner and Mother Earth. With more and more awareness regarding the human carbon footprint on our Earth, awareness about the scarcity and potential crisis of the world’s water supply is lagging behind. With that said, Hemisphere Engineering Inc., seeks to create awareness on this very real issue with the “I “CAN” Go Green”.
The building of the “I CAN” Go Green took roughly 1869 cans consisting of nutritious fruits and vegetables including: green peas, green beans, diced peaches and pears, fruit salad, as well as tuna, spam, and tomato sauce. The Hemisphere staff, buoyed by the donation matching of Hemisphere Engineering together raised $1850 in food for the Food Bank. In total, the entire sculpture weighs just over 1000 lbs, and took 2 hours to assemble!
